Large Munsterlanders - Breed History

Large Munsterlanders originated in Munsterland, Germany. The Large Munsterlander is also known by the name Grosser Munsterlander Vorstehhund. These dogs were given to farmers and hunters who worked both on water and on land. Not much is known about the history of the Large Munsterlander dog until the 1800s. Although they shared the same ancestry as the German Longhaired Pointer and the black and white Munsterlander, they were not accepted as a recognized breed until 1919. It was then that breed owners formed their own club in Germany and categorized the dog as an all-purpose hunter, capable of pointing, retrieving, and general utility work.

The breed was seriously depleted after World War II, but thanks to Herr Egon Vornholt, the Large Munsterlander eventually came back. In the early 1970s, a controlled breeding program, using German Longhair blood was undertaken in order to enlarge the gene pool. "DL" on a Munsterlander's pedigree denotes this.

The owners of these dogs wanted them registered after breeding the best of the black and whites. They were called Grosse (Large) Munsterlanders because people of the Munsterland area of North Western Germany owned the majority of the dogs. Three years after a breed club of Large Munsterlanders was formed in 1919 and a studbook was established.
